The British Medical Journal says there "is nothing unusual about the protrusion of the labia" and has condemned the elective genitoplasties women are having to make their parts flatter.Furthermore, the BMJ suggests that vaginoplasty deadens feeling in that area. If one subscribes to the belief that porn performers feel nothing anyway, then one will not be surprised to hear that the article's authors blame the trend's popularity at least partially on porn.
The BMJ piece suggests genitoplasty is a classic example of where commercial, media and social pressures artificially create a problem, fuel concern over it and then put forward a solution for it.
The article bases its findings on anecdotal evidence, but does not examine whether women are choosing the surgery on their own or as a result of pressure from their partners.
Our civilization is not so far advanced that we can spot cosmetic vaginal surgery the way we can facelifts and Botox. Maybe genitoplasty patients can make it a few years before people look deep into their crotches and ask "Have you had work done?"
