Italian human trafficking ring whacked

Italian police have broken up a human trafficking ring operating across Italy with the aid of 45 women forced to work as prostitutes.

Police arrested over 800 people in a sting known as "Spartacus", which referred to both the slavery aspect of the crime and the fact that there was no clear organizing body (though a law enforcement official delicately alluded to there being a "family-based" element within the gang of culprits).

Many of the prostitutes were from Eastern Europe. 22 buildings, including night clubs and sweat shops, were also closed down as a result of the four-month investigation.
