I spoke with celebrity nudie site Mr. Skin's Derek Meklir about Adult Who's Who, his new industry database, which is running as a side project from Skin Central's Chicago office.I wanted to know if the database compromised our freedoms or required retinal scans, fingerprints, or fluid samples. I wondered if submitting to it would bring down the scrutiny of The Man. I wanted to know if submitting cost anything.
GP: What's the purpose of this database?
DM: It will be the comprehensive list for everyone in the industry, no matter what they do.
AWW includes pictures, web links, and submitter-supplied fields (some of the earlier entries were allegedly doctored for entertainmwent value). This is a concern, but Meklir assures submitters that the database is opt-in only.
GP: How did you get the idea?
DM: Affiliates or business partners will go without a face for years before you meet up with them, (and) this way you can know who you are doing business with right away. There are too many people and (there is) too much drinking going on to remember everyone's names from the shows.
I explained that I don't drink.
If a member of the adult industry, whether he be talent, media, warehouse guy, or publicist wants to be listed, she adds her information in a contact form on the site. Future versions of the site will have pre-built fields in forms that will be submitted for Meklir to approve, but right now the site is operating pioneer-style.
GP: You seem to be top-heavy with names from the Internet side of the business. Is this part of the plan?
DM: Since the original list was made up of people I have done business with, they were mostly Internet side.
The site does not charge and Meklir says he intends for it to remain free, hoping that banners will supply the revenue.
