On a slow news day, the conservative weblog Human Events Online (which features links to conservative dating sites - HOTTT) trots out the Girls Gone Wild phenomenon as evidence of women's liberation gone wrongheaded. I agree. Drunken girls wrestling nude in sawdust for beer money and a free hat, while producers profit and face coercion and child endangerment charges is probably not the best example of how far we've come as a culture.The women currently wrestling nude in sawdust at my feet as I type at my favorite Sunset Boulevard bar are doing it for the sheer thrill of combat and exhibitionism.
No matter how you look at it, there is something menacing about a pack of red-faced guys in baseball hats shouting for a woman to take her clothes off. It has been like that at Spring Break for years. It doesn't approach that at the big porn conventions where one is confronted with the fans en masse, but something always changes when there's a crowd.
Still, the Human Events article reads like there is no choice involved, which is not the same as pressure or lack of inhibition. Getting topless for a bonehead isn't the same as slavery. Like any successful movement, feminism has led to the availability of more choices. Some of the choices might be dumb, but it is both dumb and dangerous to mistake one choice for the inevitable conclusion.
